Located in Southeast Iceland, near Vatnajökull National Park, Arnanes Country Hotel is a family-run property with a long-standing tradition of hospitality, rooted in the local landscape and community.
The story of Arnanes began in May 1993, when the family first welcomed guests into their own home in Nesjahverfi, just 1.5 km from the current location. Later that same year, part of the Arnanes farm was acquired, including 30 hectares of land and two houses. By early 1994, the family moved to Arnanes, transforming their former home into a guesthouse that remained part of the hotel until 2014.
From the beginning, development was gradual and focused on quality and experience. In 1994, the main house was renovated to include the first guest rooms, offering panoramic views over glaciers and mountains.
These early spaces established the identity of the hotel: simple, authentic, and deeply connected to the surrounding nature.
In 1997, the property expanded with the construction of three bungalows, alongside the opening of the on-site restaurant. Over the years, the restaurant has grown and evolved, doubling its capacity in 2014 to better serve guests seeking a complete Icelandic experience in one place. Further expansions in 2014 and 2016 introduced new buildings with additional private rooms, bringing the hotel to its current size of 22 rooms. Each phase of development has been designed to maintain a balance between comfort, privacy, and the natural environment.
The hotel has always remained a family-driven project. In 2022, the next generation took over the management, continuing the tradition while introducing ongoing improvements and refinements to the guest experience.
